Turned himself in and was imprisoned in the Tenma-cho Prison, and later, was sent back to Hagi.
After being returned to Shimoda by Perry, Yoshida Shoin turned himself in and became a captive on March 28, 1854 (the 1st year of Ansei era). He was then transferred to the Tenma-cho Prison in Edo on April 15th. On September 18th, the shogunate determined his guilt and decided to confine him along with Kaneko Shigesnouke. So they were moved to the domain's residence in Azabu. On 23rd of the same month, they were placed in a palanquin covered with a net and departed from Edo. They arrived in Hagi on October 24th, with Yoshida Shoin being confined in the upper cell of Noyamagoku prison and Kaneko in the lower cell of Iwakuragoku prison. In reality, the shogunate's instructions to Yoshida Shoin were to 'hand him over to his father, Yurinosuke, and have him placed under house arrest at his residence.' However, Hagi domain decided to incarcerate him in prison showing deference to the shogunate.
