People who influenced Yoshida Shoin (Monk Gessho, Monk Mokurin)
Yoshida Shoin's deep interest in national affairs was greatly influenced by his interactions with two monks, Gessho and Mokurin.
Gessho was the head priest of Myoen-ji Temple in Toosaki, Kuga District, Suo Province (present-day Yanai City). He had been warning about the need for coastal defense for a long time and actively preached upon his arrival in Hagi. His relationship with Yoshida Shoin began in March 1855 (the 2nd year of Ansei era), and they engaged in correspondence and face-to-face discussions.
Mokurin was born in Nagahama, Aki Province (present-day Kure City). At the age of 18, he experienced hearing loss and came to Hagi in September 1855 (the 2nd year of Ansei era). He initiated correspondence with Yoshida Shoin and began criticizing him rigorously. Mokurin engaged in fierce debates and confrontations, ultimately playing a role in igniting Yoshida Shoin's philosophical pursuits.
