The Yoshida family had been serving as Yamaga-style logistics instructor for generations in the clan, having received a stipend of 57 koku of rice. At the age of 5 (counting years), Yoshida Shoin became the adopted son of his uncle, Yoshida Daisuke. However, the following year, in 1835 (the 6th year of Tenpo era), Daisuke fell ill and passed away, leaving Yoshida Shoin to inherit the family estate at the age of 6. Along with his brother, Umetaro, Yoshida Shoin received a strict education by attending the home of his uncle, Tamaki Bunnoshin, who resided in the neighborhood.
