Farewell party
Yoshida Shoin, who had resolved that there was no way to save Japan other than overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate, offered to lend cannons and ammunition to the domain to defeat senior councilor Manabe Akikatsu. Sufu Masanosuke, who considered himself a loyalist, could not agree to this reckless plan.
"Yoshida Shoin lacks academic knowledge and disrupts people's mind.” He was judged as this and was once again incarcerated to Noyamagoku Prison. Even in prison, Shoin's activities did not cease. His disciples urged him to exercise restraint, deeming the timing of a righteous uprising was still premature. However, Yoshida Shoin wrote a heartrending letter, stating, "I intend to be loyal, and my friends intend to achieve great deeds."
At this point, both the domain and the shogunate were no longer dependable, so Yoshida Shoin sought to achieve the great task of overthrowing the shogunate through a grassroots uprising.
Meanwhile, the storm of the Ansei Purge by the shogunate continued unabated, and Yoshida Shoin was ultimately transported to Edo. Realizing that he could not escape death, on the eve of his departure, Yoshida Shoin, during a farewell party, wrote praises on six portrait paintings of himself, which were commissioned by his disciple Matsuura Shodo.
