Interrogation at the Edo Hyojosho" (place for making verdict)
On the interrogation of Shoin at the Edo Hyojosho, he made the honest confession about the first plan to assassinate the senior councilor ManabeAkikatsu. As a result of this confession, he was initially sent to the Tenma-cho Prison.
After the third round of interrogations, Shoin knew that his comrades Raimi kizaburo and Hashimoto Sanae had been executed for their involvement in the Sonnō jōi movement (the Movement advocating reverence for the Emperor and the expulsion of foreigners). This revelation led Shoin to prepare himself for the possibility of facing the death penalty.
The Tokugawa shogunate had made a firm decision to suppress the people involving in the Sonnō jōi movement.
The senior councilor Ii Naosuke, who ordered the execution, was well aware that Shoin had staked his life on overthrowing the shogunate.
Shoin wrote a farewell letter addressed to his father, uncle, and older brother. The letter begins with the following passage:
"Throughout my life, I regret that my scholarly pursuits remained superficial, and I couldn't deeply comprehend the whole world, now I am in the extremely difficult situation…"
He then included a waka (Japanese poem) along with the letter:
"Parental love exceeds that of children. How could they think what I am today.”
