Abe Shinzo(1954―2022)
He was born in Tokyo as the second son of former Foreign Minister Abe Shintaro and his wife, Yoko. In 1982 (the 57th year of Showa era), he entered the political arena as a secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and started his political career. At the age of 38, he was elected as a member of the House of Representatives in 1993 (the 5th year of Heisei). He went on to serve as Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Chief Cabinet Secretary, eventually
becoming Prime Minister in 2006 (the 18th year of Heisei era). He became Prime Minister again in 2012 (the 24th year of Heisei era) and remained in that role until 2020 (the 2nd year of Reiwa era), making his total tenure of 3,188 days, the longest in Japanese history.
During his time in office, he implemented various policies, including the revision of the Basic Education Law, the economic policies known as "Abenomics," a multifaceted foreign policy approach, national defense policies through security legislation, post-disaster recovery following the Great East Japan Earthquake, efforts to address the issue of North Korea's abductions, and the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. His ability to prioritize Japanese history, culture, and
traditions while adopting a global perspective allowed him to stand out as a unique and highly regarded politician.
On July 8, 2022 (the 4th year of Reiwa era), while delivering an election campaign speech in Nara City, he tragically succumbed to gunshot wounds. He was 68 years old at the time of his untimely death and received a state funeral in his honor.
